Foam Sweet Foam, or FSF, was founded over 30 years ago, in 1982. When they first opened their doors, they did sell mattresses, but their main focus was on manufacturing foam products and distributing them to upholstery shops and other mattress manufacturers. As years went on, they focused more on mattress sales and less on manufacturing foam. In 1996, they launched their first website and began selling their mattresses online. Now, their business is based entirely around selling high-quality latex mattresses online.
Instead of manufacturing their own foam as they did in the past, Foam Sweet Foam sources all of its latex directly from other mattress manufacturers. Because all of their mattresses are made to order, they’re able to cut costs and sell their beds for cheaper than those you’d find in a mattress retailer.
Foam Sweet Foam is unique in the fact that they allow you to build your own mattresses, customizing each of the layers. When you go to their site, you choose your mattress size, and then, you pick how many layers you want. They sell a 10-inch bed with three layers, a 13-inch bed with four layers, and a 16-inch mattress with five layers. After you’ve chosen how many layers you want your mattress to contain, it takes you to the next screen where you get to customize and select the firmness of each layer.
After you place your order, FSF will package up each layer and send your new bed to you. After you receive it, it’s up to you to put the layers together and build your bed. A big perk to building your own bed is having the freedom to rearrange the layers. If you feel your bed may not be as comfortable as it can be, you’re able to unzip your mattress cover, rearrange the layers, and try a new arrangement. By allowing you to customize your bed completely, FSF reduces the uncertainty as to whether or not you’re choosing the best mattress for your sleep needs.
Mattress Models & Materials
Because Foam Sweet Foam sells customizable mattresses, they don’t carry specific mattress models. They carry all of the standard mattress sizes such as Twin, TwinXL, Full, Queen, and King. Additionally, they also sell Split-King and a Split-California King mattresses. Split-sizes allow couples to choose which mattress they want for each side of the bed, furthering FSF’s “customizability.” Split-California King mattresses are relatively uncommon. If you own a Split-California King adjustable base or you own a California King but share the bed with someone who has different sleep preferences than you, a Split-Cal King is a great option.
When it comes to making these mattresses, FSF utilizes only three different materials: cotton, wool, and latex— all of which are eco-friendly and all-natural. The quilted cover of these beds is made with Joma Wool and 100% organic cotton fabric. The layers inside are 100% natural latex. When customizing your bed, you have the option to choose between Dunlop latex or Talalay latex for each layer. The latex is available as Soft to XXFirm.
The Eco-Institute has certified their Dunlop latex as being free from VOCs (Volatile Organix Compounds), and their Talalay latex is Oeko-Tex Class1 certified, meaning
There is not a significant difference between Dunlop and Talalay latex, the biggest difference being in how they’re made.
The Dunlop process is regarded as simpler and less labor intensive. First, while the latex is still in liquid form, it is poured into a mold. Then, the mold is sealed up and vulcanized. After, the foam is thoroughly washed and then dried at a high temperature to remove any excess moisture.
Dunlop latex feels springy and is denser than Talalay foam. Though it may be denser, it does not mean it is softer because weight and firmness are not always correlated.
The process of making Talalay latex is very similar to Dunlop but involves a few extra steps. First, liquid latex is poured into a mold; unlike the Dunlop process, when making Talalay latex, the liquid is only poured to the halfway mark of the mold. Then, the lid of the mold is closed, and a vacuum is used to expand the latex to fill the mold. Once the liquid latex has fully expanded, the mold is frozen. After it’s frozen, carbon dioxide is pushed through the latex, causing it to gel. After it has gelled, it is vulcanized. Then, just like the Dunlop process, the latex is thoroughly washed and dried.
Talalay latex is more light-weight than Dunlop latex and has a bouncier feel in comparison to Dunlop’s “springy” feel.
For this guide, we’ll be basing our prices off of Queen sizes.
- The 10-inch model with three layers is $1,599.
- The 13-inch model with four layers is $1,999.
- The 16-inch model with five layers is $2,399.
It’s important to note that these prices include layers made from Dunlop latex. When building the layers of your bed, you have the option to choose either Dunlop or Talalay latex. The upcharge for Talalay latex is $100 per layer. If you want each of the layers of your bed to be Talalay latex, add $100 for each layer onto the total cost for a more accurate price.
Additionally, Foam Sweet Foam offers free shipping to the continental US.
Sleep Trial & Comfort Exchange
Every Foam Sweet Foam mattress comes with a 120-night sleep trial, so you can try it in your home after you buy online. In addition to their sleep trial, FSF also offers a 90 Night Comfort Exchange. During these 90 days, you have the option to exchange one of your mattress layers for another.
Because this bed is completely customizable, if you’re finding it uncomfortable, you can simply rearrange the layers and see how the comfort changes. If you’re unable to sleep better on your new mattress, despite reorganizing the layers, you can exchange one layer for a different one. FSF is strict on their exchange policy, allowing you to exchange only one layer, one time.
If you decide you’d like to exchange a layer, FSF will send you a replacement, but they’ll require you to put down a $99 deposit. When they send you your new layer, they’ll also send a return label and plastic packaging so you can wrap up and send back the layer you want to return. Once they receive the returned layer, they’ll refund you your $99 deposit, making the exchange ultimately free.
If you’re unable to get comfy on your new FSF bed despite rearranging or swapping layers, you have the option to return it for a full refund for up to 120 nights after you receive your bed.
Foam Sweet Foam offers two warranties on their Urban Green mattresses, one for the layers inside and one for the cover.
The layers inside are protected by a 30-year non-prorated warranty. If a layer loses .5 inch of thickness, or sags half an inch, FSF will replace it.
The cover of the mattress is protected by a 10-year warranty that covers any defects in the workmanship. It’s important to note that the cover of this mattress is not supposed to be washed and doing so will void the warranty. To keep the cover clean, FSF recommends using a waterproof mattress cover to protect it.
Foam Sweet Foam Mattress Reviews
All in all, FSF receives excellent reviews from its customers. One of it’s greatest differentiators is its customizability— not many mattress brands allow you to customize each layer of your bed. On their website, they stated returns are very rare, and many positive reviews of FSF mention how they’ve found the most comfortable mattress for their sleep style. Another big perk about this bed commonly mentioned was that it’s eco-friendly and all-natural. Foam Sweet Foam is a great option for shoppers looking for a “green” bed.
A few negative reviews mentioned having difficulty deciding which layers to buy and building the most comfortable bed, ultimately frustrated in the trial and error they were experiencing. Another downfall to this bed is the price, though latex comes with many perks, FSF mattresses have a higher price tag than other types of mattresses.
If you’re looking for a high-quality latex mattress or an eco-friendly bed, Foam Sweet Foam is worth considering. If you’re not so sure an FSF mattress is for you, read our other mattress reviews to learn about other brands.
